Needed a small weld on a project I am working on, I normally use a torch and weld the old time way but this required something better and less heat. So I went to Harbor freight and for $99.00 I picked up a 90 AMP flux core wire welder. If you follow the instructions assembly is easy and you should be welding in a short time. I found this unit very capable and well worth the $99.00 bucks. For our Wheel Horse hobby it is perfect :thumb1

There are some easy no cost mods to make it allot better, min change is get good wire. Check this guy out for tips.

Decided to make a few mods to this welder as laid out on a utube video.
First thing was to replace the cheap Harbor freight .030 flux core wire with a brand name (Lincoln) wire of the same size. then I caned the gas cup on the end of the gun so I could see the weld and use a shorter wire stub. then changed the ground clamp for stouter unit that clamped to the work or table much better. I also made a 12/3 15 foot extension cord so I could get the welder outside the shop as I don't want to burn the place down. There was a noticeable improvement in the welds with these simple mods and less splatter with the better wire. But in the end the person doing the welding still needs to know how to weld, after all it is an acquired skill.

Trouty56 the gas cup I am talking about is on the tip of the gun. it is used to keep gas on the weld when the puddle is mouton. But with this welder ( flux core wire) the cup is not needed as there is no gas . the flux in the wire is burned creating a shield for the puddle. Also the gas cup causes the wire stick out to be to long (1/2 in or so) removing the gun tip allows for better control of the weld puddle plus visibility is better. So I removed the tip and tossed it..The tip shown in the photo above is not the one you get with a new machine, it does not show the larger cup.
