Powematic 1150 Drill Press

I just finished up the newest addition to my shop.

Its a Powermatic 1150 variable speed drill press. I've wanted one for years. My other drill presses just run to fast for me.

I bought this off Craig's list early last summer, but working on my two stage blower didn't give me much time to work on it. With the 2 stage done, I pulled this apart, cleaned and stripped everything, and put her back together. Corrected and adjusting as I went along. I had to use a VFD to power it, as it has a 3 phase motor, but that just gives me more speed control.

I fired her up this morning and it will bore a 1/2" drill through steel like butter - no pilot hole needed. It is fantastic to be able dial the speed down as much as I want, just as I can on my milling machine.

Time to celebrate another project done. :drinks

That thing is really sweet Kurt! :thumb1

It looks brand new, did you clean it up that good or did you have to paint it?

I wish it was that clean when I got it. I disassembled everything I could. Glass bead blasted most of it. 2 coats primer, 2 coats color, and 2 coats clear. All rattle can.

Someday, I'll get a nice blast cabinet like yours, but for me, I used a portable gun in my driveway and cleaned up the mess. I still feel the grit down my shorts.

I did have to replace the table. The original was trashed by some moron. I scored a decent one on Ebay.

I agree, this is one of the best drill presses ever made. There are larger ones, and cheaper ones, but this is a "Cadillac"

I may retire my old Craftsman. I'll keep my other two table top Walker-Turner's

super nice machine you have there.
looks as good as new after the face lift.
I see it has a variable frequency drive along with a variable pitch pulley system on it.
the best of two worlds built in to 1. not to mention the 3 phase motor making it go around & around.
that is a very serious setup, the combination of the two let you control speed and power at the same time .
the crank lift for the table is also a sweet thing
looks like it will be a top performer for you.

Thanks John, You summarized my drill press better than I ever could.

Lots of work and more money than SWMBO knows, but I am really happy with the result.
